Build Training - Spring/Summer 2008Ecos Trust runs a range of seminars and conferences for building professionals, designers, planners and self builders to share the learning from their first hand experience about how to make places and buildings more sustainable. Each event is based on extensive experience in running courses and conferences in the region and can contribute towards continuing professional development. List of events:4 April - Great Bow Yard: Lessons from an Eco-build An introduction to this award winning mixed use eco-development
completed in 2007. The half day seminar covers the theory and
practice of energy efficient design, sustainable materials selection,
use of solar and wood heating systems and ecological landscaping.
A presentation from the project director will be followed by a tour
of the restored listed building and one of the new homes built to

The afternoon will be a tour of a new Ecos Location: Great Bow Wharf, Langport, Somerset 2 May - Meeting the New Standards: This day seminar will cover the practical issues raised by building to the Code for Sustainable Homes. The morning will cover the experience of building 12 EcoHomes Excellent homes at Great Bow Yard – the lessons learnt and the market response, ending with a tour of one of the homes. The afternoon will be a tour of a new Ecos Homes development of five Code Five homes at Stawell, near Bridgwater. The session will cover the design process, the preconstruction assessment, the main compliance issues during construction and the market response to the code. The seminar will be given by the project manager and project director. Location: Great Bow Wharf, Langport, Somerset 6 May - Community Owned Renewables – legal structures A seminar for local communities with an interest in setting up a sustainable energy project. The experience of community renewables projects in Somerset and Devon will be covered and the financial and legal structures that are most appropriate to raising funds and running a community enterprise. Time will be available to assist projects with action planning for their next steps. The event is supported by Wessex Reinvestment Society, Barclays Bank and run in association with South Somerset District Council, Mendip Strategic Partnership and Somerset County Council. Location: Great Bow Wharf, Langport, Somerset 6 June - Meeting the New Standards: This seminar will cover the practical issues raised by building to the Code for Sustainable Homes. Location: Great Bow Wharf, Langport, Somerset 17 June Building to the Code – trade secrets – This half day seminar will provide impartial advice and information to help specify and purchase external joinery which are increasingly important in meeting high levels of energy efficiency required by the code. Using examples of EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes projects the tutor will take you through the issues relating to specifying timber windows in relation to buildings regulations, listed buildings and the sustainability agenda and will cover the use of sustainabily sourced timber such as FSC certified as well as reclaimed materials.
